2 Colorado residents arrested for allegedly setting booby traps, injuring 1 person

The idea of booby trapping your home may seem appealing to some after experiencing multiple burglaries, but it’s important to understand the potential legal and physical consequences.
Recently, two Colorado residents were arrested and charged with 2nd-degree assault, felony menacing and prohibited use of a weapon after their booby trap caused injury to a person. The trap was set outside their front door and involved a wire that was suspended over the steps leading up to their house.
The victim, who was conducting business in the area, heard and felt a loud boom and then noticed the wire caught around his lower leg. He also experienced pain in his ear and affected vision. The device was spotted a few days later by detectives investigating the incident, and ultimately, a search warrant was executed at the house resulting in the arrest of Bryan Hill and Tracy Remington.
Setting up a booby trap may seem like a justifiable solution to protect your property, but it’s important to note that it’s illegal and can result in severe legal consequences. Booby trapping or setting up any device designed to harm someone, including burglars, is considered a criminal offense in most states. In fact, some states may also hold the homeowner liable for any injuries caused by a booby trap, even if the homeowner didn’t intend to cause harm.
Moreover, booby trapping your home is incredibly dangerous and can lead to much worse outcomes than a burglary. It’s important to seek other legal and safe means of protecting your property. One effective solution is to install a security system or hire a security guard to patrol the area. Both options can act as deterrents and alleviate the risks associated with booby trapping.
