4-Month-Old Savagely Beaten & Blinded on 11th Day of Day Care

An unlicensed day care owner in Olathe, Kansas, has been found guilty in court after she allegedly committed an atrocious crime that left a baby blind and permanently changed.
Paige Hatfield was meant to be caring for then 4-month-old Kingston Gilbert on January 31, 2017.

Hatfield had only been taking care of Kingston for 11 days when the assault happened at the unlicensed day care she was operating out of her home.
The attack was discovered only after Hatfield called 911 to report that an infant in her care was throwing up, according to Fox4 KC. In court documents, it was revealed that doctors at Children’s Mercy Hospital found the boy was “suffering from abusive head trauma,” which is “only caused by violent non-accidental physical trauma.” They added that the boy’s injuries must have resulted from “extreme violence.”

Kingston’s mother says her son never fully recovered from his traumatic attack.
Kingston’s mother, Ashleigh Garcia, explained that as a result of the violence her son has faced, his brain is “severely damaged” and he is blind. At the time of his incident, Garcia said they “spent 18 days in the ICU just praying that he got through.” And although her little guy did end up making it, the effects of the trauma he had been through would end up being permanent.
“We were told by doctors he is never going to be the same boy,” she said. “I mean, we pretty much had to grieve the loss of our child and accept that the baby that we were bringing home was not the baby that I dropped off at daycare that day.”
Years later, Hatfield finally had her day in court and was convicted of assaulting baby Kingston.
Hatfield was found guilty in a courtroom in Johnson County, Kansas. According to Fox 31, she was charged with a felony, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, and a misdemeanor, operating an unlicensed day care. Prosecutors asked for an enhanced sentence because Hatfield was a child care provider.
“There’s days that are hardly survivable,” Garcia explained of life with her son since the attack. And though her son has been forever changed by the vicious beating that his childcare provider put him through, she said that Kingston’s family “still see(s) our baby in his spirit.”
