Can the Philadelphia Eagles ink Jalen Hurts to an extension?

Philadelphia Eagles fans are no strangers to big, guaranteed quarterback contracts. The last time they did so was a four-year, $128 million contract handed to Carson Wentz, which at the time included the largest guaranteed contract ever awarded to an NFL player.

Now, with rookie Jalen Hurts taking over for Wentz and having a stellar season, Eagles GM Howie Roseman said the team hopes to get Hurts re-signed as soon as possible, and it’s almost certain he won’t just beat the $128 million figure Wentz was given, but will also go directly beyond it.

Roseman is likely asking for at least $50 million annually for Hurts, which is a hefty sum for a team that already has a lot of salary cap issues. This could hamper what Philadelphia can do with the rest of their roster, as Hurts’ contract could take up about 25 percent of the team’s cap space. Roseman will have his work cut out for him to make sure the Eagles can keep as many of their upcoming free agents as possible, including Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Javon Hargrave, Kyzir White and TJ Edwards.

Locked on Eagles podcast host Gino Cammilleri believes the Eagles have the right general manager, Howie Roseman, to handle this situation for Philadelphia. Roseman dropped out salary cap scenarios and even renewed a former franchise quarterback to a deal less than half a decade ago.

Hurts has proven he’s the kind of franchise quarterback Philadelphia can build on, but losing talented players to cap reasons is always a hard pill for fans — especially after they’ve come so close to seeing another Super Bowl trophy to bring to the city of brotherly love.

It remains to be seen if the Eagles can ink Hurts to an extension, but with Roseman at the helm, they have a good chance of making it happen.
