Ex-cop who killed George Floyd is sentenced on tax evasion charges — but gets entire sentence credited to time served
Convicted former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, has pleaded guilty to two counts of tax evasion after admitting to withholding tens of thousands of dollars from Minnesota tax authorities over several years.
Despite being sentenced to 13 months in prison, Chauvin will not receive an additional sentence as he was given credit for time already served.
The court appearance was via Zoom as he is currently serving a 22-and-a-half-year sentence for the murder of George Floyd.
Chauvin’s tax investigation began in June 2020 after a tip about his finances was submitted to the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
His ex-wife, Kellie Chauvin, who was charged with underreporting their income from 2014 to 2019, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting tax fraud last month.
Chauvin’s federal civil rights sentence of 21 years for violating Floyd’s civil rights will be served concurrently.
