Less-Redacted Affidavit Provides New Details About Trump’s Obstruction of Justice Charges
The Justice Department released a new, less-redacted version of the affidavit used to obtain the search warrant for classified documents at Mar-a-Lago last year.
The affidavit provides new details about the storage room where the classified documents were found, and suggests that federal investigators knew more than previously understood about Trump’s orders to subordinates to move around the boxes to hide them from investigators.
This information is significant because it forms the backbone of the obstruction of justice charges against Trump. The charges allege that Trump obstructed justice by trying to conceal the classified documents from investigators.
The new information in the affidavit also suggests that DOJ prosecutors were onto the obstruction of justice charges very early in the investigation.
While the public is only seeing a redacted version of the affidavit, Trump and his co-defendant Walt Nauta will have access to the full document. They are likely to use this information to challenge the legality of the search.
