His wife contacted police over concerns that he had recorded their young children using the bathroom.

Police obtained a search warrant for the devices, and detectives performed a preliminary forensic analysis, in which more than 900 images of child pornography and multiple videos from the bathroom camera were found. The videos showed children and adults using the bathroom who appeared to be unaware that they were being recorded.

An arrest warrant was obtained on March 9, and police arrested Rovito during a traffic stop. Rovito was charged in connection with the possession of child pornography and the surreptitious recording of an identifiable person who was undressed. He was booked into the Shasta County Jail.

The proliferation of child pornography is a growing concern that affects communities across the country. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, there were over 20.9 million reports of suspected child sexual exploitation worldwide in 2020. These reports included images and videos of child sexual abuse, often captured by hidden cameras like the one found in Rovito’s home.

The effects of child pornography on victims are long-lasting and devastating. According to the American Psychological Association, victims of child sexual abuse experience a range of consequences, including emotional distress, poor physical health, and social isolation.

As such, it is imperative that individuals who suspect or witness child sexual abuse or exploitation report it to authorities immediately. Reports can be made to local law enforcement agencies, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, or the CyberTipline. Rovito’s wife’s decision to report her husband’s actions may have been difficult, but in doing so, she helped protect her children and potentially others from harm.
