Rep. George Santos (R-NY) Planning to Run for Re-Election Despite Ethics Scandals

Despite facing a slew of ethics issues since his campaign win in November, Rep. George Santos (R-New York) is planning to run for re-election in 2024. Fellow New York Rep. Ritchie Torres (D) revealed on Twitter that the first-year Representative is telling advisors he wishes to serve a second term, despite previously promising that he wouldn’t run for reelection. According to an article published by CNN, sources close to Santos have been told he will seek re-election.

Santos has been facing allegations that he consistently lied to constituents while on the campaign. He said he attended colleges he never went to, worked at companies he had never worked for and lied about his family’s background. Despite these issues, Santos tweeted on Tuesday that he “will continue to work for #NY03 and no amount of Twitter trolling will stop me.”

On Long Island, Concerned Citizens of NY-03 marched in front of the embattled representative’s office with signs reading, “George Santos lied to us.” Jody Kass, the Concerned Citizens of NY-03, told CBS that the march was to ensure that Santos knew they were not going away.

Santos, who has maintained his innocence, stepped down from his assigned committees earlier this month while ethics investigations are conducted. He said that it was important to focus on serving the constituents of New York’s Third Congressional District without distraction.

With the 2022 midterms fast approaching, it remains to be seen if Rep. George Santos will be able to successfully defend his seat.
