Trump’s decision to not pay legal fees for co-defendants could backfire, says former January 6 committee investigator

Trump’s decision not to pay legal fees for his co-defendants in the Georgia election conspiracy case could backfire, according to former senior investigative counsel for the January 6 committee, Andrew Aganga-Williams.
Aganga-Williams said that when witnesses have Trump-paid lawyers, they are more likely to be evasive and uncooperative. He pointed to the example of Cassie Hutchinson, who initially told the January 6 committee that she didn’t recall key details about the events of that day. However, after she got a new lawyer, she provided much more detailed and incriminating testimony.
Aganga-Williams also said that the financial pressure of mounting legal bills could lead Trump’s co-defendants to turn on him. “When folks are feeling the pressure, they’re going to be more inclined to want to get out of the case,” he said. “And the quickest way to get out of the case is to plead guilty.”
He added that the case is still in its early stages, and the legal bills will only get higher as it progresses. “This case has not even begun to warm up,” he said. “When it does get moving, those bills are going to skyrocket.”
Aganga-Williams concluded by saying that Trump’s decision not to pay his co-defendants’ legal fees is “good for justice” but “bad for Trump.” He said that it is likely that some of Trump’s co-defendants will eventually turn on him in order to save themselves.
