The bullet missed his heart and he remains in a stable condition after he was taken to the Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth.
Mum Baronica Anne Chapa Mares and dad Nathan Stephen Mares were arrested by police and a warrant said each was charged with one count of making a firearm accessible to a child resulting in serious bodily injury.
She was subsequently released while dad Nathan posted a $2,500 (£2,100) bond.
The mum reportedly told police that she was at home with her three sons aged eight, nine and 12. The couple also has a five-year-old daughter.
She claimed she was cleaning the kitchen when a loud “pop” was heard coming from her bedroom.
According to an affidavit: “Baronica told officers that she heard her kids screaming so she ran to her bedroom and saw the victim covered in blood from a chest wound.”
It added: “Baronica stated she carried her son outside and yelled for help while one of her children called 911.
“The neighbour across the street heard the commotion and drove Baronica and her children to the hospital. Baronica stated at first she had thought that her son had shot himself in the chest, but she wasn’t sure.”
The young boy is expected to make a full recovery, despite the seriousness of his injuries.
The affidavit stated: “Luckily, the victim survived and is expected to make a full recovery.”
Law enforcement also said that when dad Nathan arrived at the hospital, he refused to talk with authorities after first talking to a lawyer.
He was reported to have been with his brother at the time of the gunshot.
Investigators are said to have been told he confessed to owning a Glock 42 .38 calibre handgun.
Police said they hear Nathon and Baronica telling their children they should not have been in their parent’s room without supervision. The children were interviewed by specialists.
The affidavit said: “The 9-year-old son told the witness that he and the victim were playing in their parents’ room when they found a gun in a dresser.
“The 9-year-old said he and the victim were playing with the gun when he accidentally pulled the trigger and shot his brother.”
More weaponry was located in the bedroom after a police search, where two rifles were found leaning against a wall and a revolver in the nightstand dresser.
Two handguns were found, one of which was loaded and believed to have been the gun used in injuring the boy.
